My World Tuesday - Folk Arts

Folk arts are everywhere around us. They are the common things which we use everyday whether functional or decorative. We play with them, we wear them, we cook and eat with them. The folk arts are just simple things usually handcrafted for people to use and be amused. We always see and use them everyday, and sometimes we neglect to think how pretty and how cleverly they are made.

The garden pots are common things seen in most part of the country, but we seldom thought about how much heat did a potter resisted to be able to come up with a product which will last and make a simple plant looks more attractive.

The weaver who makes some of our fashionable bags, baskets and decorative lanterns, makes me stop and think, how many blistered fingers they got after finishing a product or two before we could carry our bags with all the necessary stuff we need or fill our house with such colorful lanterns?

How many sleepless nights before a painter illustrates the beauty in his imaginations? Most painters are fond of illustrating the life in the countryside, the farm, and the rich harvest in the country.

The art of woodcarving is said to be a tradition passed from father to son. They learn by simply watching the carvers at work and with that they can create marvelous things out of wood for use in the house, farm or important occasions. The natives in the mountainous regions uses carved woods for their meals, like those shown in the picture, big bowls are for main dish while the smaller ones are for sauces, the flat ones are plates.

As I have told you before, that our country is an archipelago, the abundance of seashells influenced the people especially those living in coastal areas to create exotic decorative things, like shell curtains, chandeliers, lamps are just simple things that are made without set patterns. They are the product of ingenuity which took much time and patience to make.

Simple things do not change. All folk arts are simple and by being simple, they endure. This is my world.

Oh, AL, what a richness of folk arts you display here. I must say I covet the shell curtains and whatever those round things are in the last picture. Your pictures and descriptions of the toil and artistry of the craftspeople is truly inspiring. How do you find the time to do all this??? But don't stop!

Al, all of these crafts are amazing, the pottery and wood crafts are so beautiful. You are right that most people don't realize how much work goes into some of these pieces. I have done a little pottery and used a kiln. If the pottery was fired using traditional methods rather than a kiln it is very hot work.

Thanks for sharing all these beautiful pieces.
